This song sounded fine on an AM radio with a little speaker amid daily life and not nearly as dark as you perceived it hearing it in a vacuum with headphones. Honestly I never felt it was depressing but more reflective and a bit sardonic with a glorious melody and arrangement. Whatever the public LOVED it. Robin wrote that song. The Bee Gees wrote almost all of their own songs. They were very creative songwriters.

I was there that night, Dani (on NYE 1999), to usher in a new millenium with Barbra. I still have the little commemorative pen flashlight they gave everyone there, just in case all power went down from the change to 2000 at midnight, and to this very second, this concert performance still remains the highlight of my life. Thankfully the transition from 1999 to 2000 went off without a hitch, and the people in the room that night were treated to an unforgettable experience. The little girl, Lauren Frost, was selected to play young Barbra at 13, so Barbra referred to her in the show as "Mini-Me". She was fabulous too. And this is the truth, that pen flashlight... it still lights up with the same battery that came with it 24 years later... I've never replaced it. Another testament to Barbra's timelessness. Thanks for an authentic reaction, as you usually do. Barbra just takes your breath away, doesn't she?!

The girl was Lauren Frost playing a 13 year-old Barbra. This was NYEve 2000 so the show had a retrospective theme and started with Barbra at 13 (with Lauren playing Barbra) when her Mom took her to Nola Studios where she paid for each of them to record a song. Barbra sang "You'll Never Know". (In fact there is a techinical analysis of her 13 year-old vocals on that original recording by Wings of Pegasus here on YT done just a week or two ago.) "Yentl" was a tribute to her father whom she lost at 15 months, so "You'll Never Know" was included here as it "fit" and gave reason to bring Lauren back in from the opening and close out the first act.

Fridas vocals are flawless

Semi-officially this was Frida's divorce song, the companion piece to Winner Takes It All. But it seems at least subconsciously it could just as well have been a eulogy for the band: It was featured on their last album, (not counting the comeback 40 years later), and those sessions were famously glum and joyless for the members. Either way it is a brilliant and beautiful piece of pop art.

I use to work at a restaurant on Hollywood and vine. Paparazzi use to hang out there. One time when they weren’t around and Streisand came in with her husband one of the valets called the paparazzi and tipped them off. When she left and the paparazzi hounded her she called the restaurant and complained about it. I’m not a huge celebrity fan but I couldn’t blame her. Those paparazzi could be normal one second talking to celebrities respectfully then in an instant be like “what u think about your wife being seen out with so and so?”. Just to get a reaction.
